Exquisite Corpse

Type based interpretation of Ed Clarke's work

Drawing inspiration from the many works featured both in the museum’s collection and exhibition galleries, PAMM staff offered a special team-building activity: Exquisite Corpse.

Exquisite Corpse is a collaborative poetry game that traces its roots to the Parisian Surrealist Movement. This game is played by several people, each of whom writes a word on a sheet of paper, folds the paper to conceal it, and passes it on to the next player for his or her contribution. This is an excellent way to collaborate with other poets and to free oneself from imaginative constraints or habits. Remember, many of the most effective phrases or metaphors are those that are most surprising. So gather your group together for this fun activity! The exercise is one of many offered for groups of all sizes, industries and work environments.

“We had a great experience. The activity was a surprise for the team, I feel we achieved the objective of having the team together exposed to a different unknown challenge to think outside the box in an area that is different to our day to day activities. Our guide did an excellent job facilitating the activity and explaining the exhibition.” – PAMM activity participant, July 2015

These interactive/team building activities cost $30 per participant (includes museum admission, taxes and gratuities). For more information, contact Cristina Urdaneta, visitor services and group sales manager, at curdaneta@pamm.org or 786 345 5662.

Led by Teaching Artist Asser Saint-Val, the group toured the works on view in Overtown as a part of the PAMM Inside|Out Program for 2017. Engaging in conversations about the works and how they exist within the community setting, the group collectively came up with their own theme of "mystery." Following the tour, the group sat down together and made their own works of art in the community based on their discussions and theme.

Toba Khedoori explores the artist’s nuanced and powerful body of work. Born in Sydney, Australia in 1964, Khedoori has lived and worked in Los Angeles since 1990. Her early works are notable for their precise draftsmanship and for their use of negative space—often at a very large scale. Khedoori frequently depicts architectural forms from distanced perspectives, rendering commonplace objects and spaces familiar yet decontextualized. In recent years, she has transitioned from paper to canvas, producing smaller¬-scale works that hover between representation and abstraction. Like her earlier compositions, these works are enigmatic and acutely detailed; in an art world awash with rapidly moving images and saturated colors, Khedoori remains committed to the silent, slow, and exacting process of working by hand. The exhibition is the first major museum presentation of Khedoori’s new paintings and her first survey in fifteen years.

Opa-Locka residents enjoyed a night of art-making, live music, giveaways and a flashlight tour of the Inside|Out works installed throughout the community. Drawing inspiration from Jonathan Hernandez's Rongwrong XXIV, people were encouraged to make their own collages using magazines, yarn, glue and markers.

At sundown, the group set out for a flashlight tour of the high-quality reproductions installed around the community led by teaching artist David Lloyd. On the tour, participants learned about the works that are a part of the Inside|Out collection and how they exist within the community setting.

Working with community partners around Miami-Dade County, PAMM Inside|Out installs high-quality reproductions of the museum’s permanent collection in outdoor environments. This program seeks to engage communities in the arts, creating accessibility and sparking dialogues between the community environment and works of art.

During the celebration, participants created their own work of art inspired by Ed Clark's Pink Wave. Art Africa Miami also led its Black Canvas Party and celebrated the opening of the Art Africa Pop-Up Gallery. PAMM resident DJ Phaxas set the evening’s soundtrack with grooving jams all night long.

Led by teaching artist Alex Zastera, residents toured the Inside|Out works installed throughout Overtown while learning about the museum’s collection and how Inside|Out incorporates the community and its history into conversations around art. Tour guests were in for a special treat when community members David Brown and Neil Hall gave historical Overtown facts at different tour stops.

Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) today launched a mobile app, powered by Cuseum, to enhance the museum-going experience for its visitors. The PAMM app gives users an opportunity to experience, learn and engage with the art on view at PAMM by providing contextual multi-media content, including audio tours and videos of the interior and exterior galleries, an interactive map, and a calendar of museum events and programs. The app also offers unique content related to PAMM’s special exhibitions. For PAMM’s current exhibition, Toba Khedoori, the app offers exclusive audio interviews with PAMM Director Franklin Sirmans, the exhibition’s curator, that address the artist’s silent, slow and exacting process of working by hand.

“Art and technology have always been intertwined,” said Sirmans. “With technology always rapidly changing, we are looking to evolve the museum-going experience with our visitors’ wants and needs. This app is next step in our evolving relationship to technology and its application to the museum experience.”

The PAMM app is part of a six-month pilot with Cuseum, a leader in the mobile app space for art museums and cultural organizations.

“We’re excited to be partnering with Pérez Art Museum Miami, one of the most innovative contemporary art museums in the country,” said Brendan Ciecko, CEO & founder of Cuseum. “PAMM's commitment to engaging and connecting with their audience through new digital channels is inspiring – we’re honored to support these initiatives with the new PAMM mobile app.”

The mobile app also supports PAMM’s wide range of interpretation needs and is a key tool for video storytelling, putting rich and unique content into the palm of visitors’ hands. With artist interviews and videos produced by the museum’s on-staff digital journalist – a newly established position at PAMM that seeks to leverage video content to amplify PAMM’s art, mission and programs – the app is the first in a series of upcoming tech initiatives launching at the museum. Later this month, PAMM will announce a new pilot program funded by the museum’s close partners at the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, focused on in the intersection of art and augmented reality.

The launch of PAMM app has been part of a broader conversation with the Knight Foundation on how to incporate technology into the museum to connect people to art, enhance the visitor experience and advance scholarship.

“Art museums have a unique role in telling our stories, reflecting our cultures and helping us understand the world around us. To remain relevant, they have to adapt to the way people live today,” said Victoria Rogers, vice president for arts at Knight Foundation. “We hope to help museums accelerate that process and use digital tools to meaningfully engage visitors in high-quality art.”

The PAMM app is available for free from the App Store on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, or on all devices at pamm.org/app.
